A group guitar lesson for children in Bushey Heath.

Why group guitar lessons?

With a few noticeable exceptions, guitar is not a solitary instrument. It can be used to:

  • play chords to accompany the voice
  • play riffs, such as Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water”
  • play melodies
  • take guitar solos like Slash, Jimi Hendrix or Brian May

We love group guitar lessons as this format gives students the chance to properly explore all aspects of guitar playing; to better understand the instrument’s various roles in contemporary music and to develop the students’ ensemble skills, rhythm, aural awareness and even their understanding of composition.

Our team create bespoke arrangements of the most influential and iconic songs of the past 60 years where the whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts. For the students, this is accessible. It inspires confidence. It creates a sense of achievement. But most importantly of all, it sounds amazing! The different parts of the music are organised into varying degrees of difficulty to ensure that all students in the group are involved and engaged and appropriately challenged for their playing level. As well as guitar, other instruments such as bass, percussion or some light backing vocals may be included to add to the richness and understanding of the music and to help the lessons stay varied.

We also hold annual concerts so students can show off what they have learned and write reports to keep you up to date on their progress. See what else makes us unique at Why GTB.

What if I miss my guitar lesson?

Unfortunately we are not able to replace or refund missed lessons. However, students will still receive their weekly email with lesson notes and practise material. We also offer a catch-up 30-minute one-to-one lesson at a greatly reduced price of £15, subject to availability.

What about graded exams?

Graded music exams not only offer structure and a well defined target, but from grade 6 onwards they also offer UCAS points. Whilst taking guitar exams is by no means mandatory, everything we cover in lessons runs in parallel with the RSL syllabus. RSL, formerly Rockschool, is the leading board in contemporary guitar grades. For the first time, students can enter an exam playing the music of their favourite artists, such as Ed Sheeran, Adele and Taylor Swift as well as iconic bands such as AC/DC and The Beatles.

We cover all aspects of the guitar exams in the group classes and when the students are ready, we will send you an email to let you know, as well as information on the exam fees, locations and deadlines. We will administer the application for you to help make the process as simple as possible. If you would prefer not to enter the exam, that is absolutely fine too! For us, the most important thing is that students enjoy the lessons and make progress. Success in the grade exams is just a bonus! Having said that, the majority of our students achieve distinctions in their grade exams.

How do I get started?

Beginners
If you’d like to get started, simply get in touch so that we can exchange a few details and we’ll match you up with the group that’s the best fit for your age, playing level and availability. We regularly start new beginners’ groups that students can join with no previous experience; starting with the basics so that students can develop a solid foundation and build a love for music at a comfortable pace.

To join a group, there is a non-refundable fee of £66 for the first three lessons; £22 per lesson.

We even have guitars for hire to help you get started from only £3/week.

Students with previous experience
For more experienced players, we offer a one-to-one consultation lesson so that we can get to know you and your playing level. We’ll then recommend the group that we think is the best fit for you, ready to take a FREE, no obligation taster lesson with the group. If you enjoy the taster lesson, you’ll then be able to join the group permanently.

If there isn’t a group that’s a good fit, we can explore whether one-to-one lessons or home tuition may be a more suitable option.

Friends and family
If you have a ready-made group of friends or family members that you’d like to learn with that’s fantastic. We’ve taught lots of families as well as paired lessons with a parent and child. Depending on the number of students in the group and your learning objectives, you may choose to either form a self-contained group, buddy up with another family (a great way to make new friends and save money!) or for individuals to branch off and join their own separate groups. We’re happy to discuss these options with you and recommend the best course of action.

Group Lesson Reviews

Becky, parent

My daughter has been learning to play the ukulele with Peter for a term now. She is building in confidence (which for a child who can be very shy in social situations is massive) and really enjoys going to class. Peter is incredibly patient and has been proactive in trying to understand how to support her in developing her confidence to support her in progressing with her learning. A fantastic teacher! Lesson outcomes are shared with parents at the end of every lesson with helpful resources to allow parents to support children at home. If you want a teacher that genuinely cares about the progress of your child, provides excellent tuition, great resources and communicates with you to help your child progress then this is the place to go!

Raaj, parent

Pete is stimulating and innovative in the way he teaches the guitar. My 8 year old son has recently joined one of the group sessions and it is evident that he is happy and productive following each lesson. As a parent who doesn’t play the guitar, I find the communication and follow up emails very useful and this helps me to support my son at home with his practice.

Caroline Disbrowe, acoustic guitar student

I’ve wanted to learn guitar for a long time and after failing to self-learn I found Pete at GTB. I have joined a group of other adults that want to learn and Pete provides us with a relaxed, friendly environment to learn in. He is very patient with us and teaches at a speed that suits everyone. His methods are really helping me improve and each week I see a difference in my abilities. I would highly recommend him.

Shivam Mehta, electric guitar student

Excellent friendly service, timely responses, competitive pricing, great communications, good advice. Highly recommend

Nisha, parent

After only 6 lessons, we are amazed at how quickly our 7-year-old son has gone from nearly breaking the guitar strings, to playing something that resembles music. It is so lovely to see him rehearsing with enthusiasm following each lesson without being prompted. The quirky games for homework are a great touch too. Thank you, Pete

Jordana, acoustic guitar student

Having barely picked up a guitar before and being a complete beginner, I was a little daunted about starting lessons. However, Pete has been amazing; he is always incredibly patient and helpful and his lessons are very interactive and enjoyable. The 30 minutes just zooms past. I feel like I have already learnt such a lot in a short space of time and cannot recommend him highly enough as a guitar teacher.

Sonia, parent

My 9 year old son really enjoys his guitar lessons with Peter and looks forward to his lesson every week. As a beginner he has learnt a lot in the last 7 months. I get an email after every lesson to let me know what they’ve been learning so my son can practice at home. I highly recommend Peter. He is very organised, friendly and approachable.
